Football Tactics Board Apps: What to Look For (and the One That Simulates)

May 17, 2026 · TBFootball Team

Search “football tactics board app” and you’ll find two very different kinds of tool wearing the same name. Knowing which one you actually want saves a lot of time.

Type 1: Static drawing boards

These are digital whiteboards. You drop player tokens onto a pitch, draw arrows for runs and passes, maybe record a short animation of the tokens sliding along your arrows, and export it.

Good for: explaining a set-piece or a shape to players; building a session plan; sharing a diagram.

The limit: nothing is tested. The tokens follow your arrows exactly because you told them to. There’s no defender deciding to step across, no keeper narrowing the angle. It shows intent, not outcome.

Type 2: Tactics simulators

A simulator takes your plan and plays it out against opposition that reacts. You still draw the move — but then the engine resolves it: defenders close lanes, the keeper sets, your pass is threaded or cut out.

Good for: pressure-testing an idea; learning why a pattern works or fails; and, frankly, having fun — it turns tactics into a game.

The limit: it’s a model of football, not a substitute for the grass. But as a thinking tool, it answers the question a static board can’t: does this actually work?
