How to Beat a High Press in Football

June 5, 2026 · TBFootball Team

A well-organised high press is terrifying: the opponent swarms you near your own goal, and one loose touch becomes a chance against you. But a press is also a gamble, every player who pushes up leaves space behind. Beat it and you’re through on goal. Here’s how.

Why a press can be beaten

When a team presses high, they commit numbers forward. That means space opens up behind their midfield and defence. The whole challenge is surviving the first wave of pressure long enough to play into that space. Stay calm, and a press becomes an invitation.

Five ways to beat the press

1. Bait it, then break it

Invite the press by playing a few safe, short passes at the back. As the opponent steps up to chase, the gaps behind them widen. The moment a presser commits, that’s your cue to go.

2. Play through the lines

The press wants to force you backwards or wide. Beat it by finding a player between their lines, a midfielder dropping into the gap between their forwards and midfield. One pass into feet there, and the press is broken behind the ball.

3. Use the goalkeeper as an extra player

A modern keeper who can pass is a free man. Using the keeper to circulate the ball creates an overload at the back, the press can never cover everyone, so someone is always free.

4. The early ball in behind

If they push their defensive line high to press, the space is behind that line. A quick, accurate ball over the top, played early before the line can drop, springs a runner clean through. Risky, but devastating.

5. Don’t dwell, move it first time

The press feeds on hesitation. One-touch passing, knowing your next move before the ball arrives, takes the press’s main weapon (time pressure) away.

The trade-off

Beating a press is high-risk, high-reward. Get it right and you’re through on goal with the defence stretched. Get it wrong and you concede in a dangerous area. That tension is exactly what makes it one of football’s best tactical battles, and the opposite problem to breaking down a low block.

Practise it by doing

Reading about beating a press is one thing; feeling the timing is another. In Tactic Board Football Game you can set up against pressure and draw your escape, the bait, the pass between the lines, the early ball over the top, then watch whether your players pull it off against reactive defenders. Mistime it and you’ll see the move break down; nail it and you’re away.
